Southern Namibia

Corona Guest Farm is surrounded by mountains, the most impressive of which is the 2 347m table-topped Gamsberg. The farm nestles in a valley and is shaded by an ancient grove of jacaranda trees. From the Corona Guest Farm you can explore the mountains on horseback where rock paintings and gem stones can be found. Spending a night in a mountain hut in Gaub Canyon, is a star gazer's dream.

One of the most stunning features of this area, apart from the desert, is Africa's version of the Grand Canyon, the Fish River Canyon. Erosion from millions of years has formed an amazing gouge out of the earth's surface. Its full length is 160km and it spans 27km. Water flows intermittently through the canyon, and at most times of the year there are rock pools of water where fish breed and hikers can overnight and relax after a hard day's walking. Game viewing in and around the canyon is rich and diverse. Mountain zebra often leave their tracks at the many waterholes and large kudu are to be found in the densely vegetated reaches near Ais-Ais.

Canon Lodge is situated in the Gondwana Canon Park east of the Fish River Canyon and here nature imposes on the design of the lodge.

Boulders and trees have been allowed to remain as aesthetic features in the stone and thatch guest suites. Flights into the Fish River Canyon are quite spectacular.

If the long route seems tiring, a visit to the peaceful haven of La Vallee Tranquille is recommended. Here a touch of France mingled with Namibian serenity adds an exotic dimension to a restful experience where one can enjoy a welcome sundowner in the shadow of the ruins of a German fort.

The lodge was established when it's French owner was captivated by the area's beauty while on holiday. She returned to start the lodge, offering French cuisine and hospitality amid the magnetic Namibian splendour.

Just a few hours outside Windhoek, the Intu Afrika Kalahari Game Reserve allows visitors the rare experience of the warm friendliness of a truly authentic San village. The San offer to take guests along trails all the while pointing out the spoor of animals and demonstrating some of the legendary tracking techniques on which they have survived for thousands of years.

The wind-swept fishing village of Luderitz with its "gingerbread" architecture and the nearby ghost town of Kolmanskop are enchanting relics of German settlement and the legacy of a fruitless gold rush respectively.
