The vast scale of Namibia means that tourists often overlook the fascinating northern regions of the Kaokoveld and Damaraland. Rocky desert mountains have become the home of the world famous desert-adapted elephants which have managed to survive in this hostile environment where water is a scarce and haphazard commodity.
Historical San etchings may be found in the rocky ravines and shelters where these hardy hunter-gatherer people made a home long ago. Bordering the Kaokoveld to the north is the remote and wild Kunene River, which thunders down waterfalls at Ruacana and Epupa.
Makalani palm trees fringe this waterway that has only a few metres of greenery on its banks as it chokes through rocky desert country. In the shadow of the Baines and Hartmann mountains, the rare black faced impala grazes peacefully. The nomadic Ovahimba tribe roam this area with their cattle, swathed in skins and coated in animal grease.

Outside the town of Khorixas is the Petrified Forest, where giant tree trunks have turned to stone. The whole area is rich in geological and archeological discoveries. Amongst the attractions of the northern region visitors are often wooed to the Okonjima Lodge nestled in the Omboroko mountains. |
Here is the home of the famous Africat Foundation, dedicated to preserving Africa's wild cats. Here visitors have an opportunity to observe this wildlife conservation project first hand while experiencing the warmth and hospitality of this lodge with its extended family of animals rescued by the foundation.
So don't be surprised to share your breakfast table with Elvis, the baboon, or Leakey, the mongoose! San and mountain trails here are beautiful.
