Namib Desert

The Namib is known as the 'living desert" because beneath it's harsh facade lives a myriad of plant and animal life. Despite the scarcity of rain, sea mists are borne by whispering winds from the icy Atlantic Ocean and precious drops of dew and condensation created by this phenomenon are the life blood of the Namib's strange and unique creatures.

Within this realm of wind-sculpted dunes and 700 million-year-old mountains you can explore the rolling dune surfaces on discovery walks or by guided nature drive. The beautiful Sossusvlei Mountain Lodge cradled in the desert mountains, fuses unprecedented desert sophistication with the beauty of the landscape.

Here you will see the clown-like painted faces of the oryx, Hartman's zebra, ostrich, baboon and Grant's golden mole. Leopards have been seen on the raised dunes, and the proud silhouette of the oryx can be admired as they graze on the plains.

Brown hyenas track the spoor of their prey while lizards bask in the sun and perform the comical thermal dance to regulate their temperature. Custom designed 4x4's offer the perfect means of game viewing, particularly at sunrise and sunset when a heavenly presence splashes the dunes in fantastical colours.

Guests are invited to take to walking trails on offer at these times when the colours of the desert are at their most spectacular. World-weary souls cannot fail to be uplifted in this mystical landscape. As darkness falls on the desert, nature's grandeur is not over, for the stars come out and dazzle with their astral wonder. The night sky is crisply clear and a view of the stars through the powerful telescope at the Sossusvlei Mountain Lodge's observatory affords astronomy enthusiasts the opportunity to identify stars and constellations with a digitally-aided telescope. The lodge has also fitted all suites with stargazing windows above the bed.

The namib Naukluft Park boasts the highest sand dunes in the world - at Sossusvlei. The sheer height is contrasted by deeply carved canyons and ravines, which dive below the earth's surface, concealing more of the earth's wonders.

A hike to the top of one of the Sossusvlei dunes impresses the actual scale of these land features on it's humbled climbers. And guests of Wolwedans Dunes Lodge which faces the desert mountains can vouch for the optical illusions the ongoing visual displays create.
