The bizarrely shaped piece of land is an oddity left over from Germanic colonial architects who attempted to join Namibia with their eastern colony. Tanzania, by creating a corridor now known as the Caprivi Strip. It is well-wooded Eden of greenery, quite diffenent to the rest of Namibia and is crossed by large permanantly flowing rivers, which are the most unspoilt in all of Southern Africa.

The banks of the Kavango River are lined with traditional fishing villages where elephant and other game are common roadside sights. The river cascades over the Popa Falls and flows into Botswana's Okavango Delta. In the middle of the Caprivi strip the meandering Kwando River is a bird haven while further east, Namibia touches Africa's mighty Zambezi River.

With more than 400 recorded species of birdlife in the area, you may be lucky enough to sight the rare African Fin Foot. This area also boasts some of the best fly fishing rapids in the country. Island walks and a visit to a traditional fishing village adds depth to your experience. Languid channels and inlets may tempt you to take a mokoro(dug out canoe) trip. As champagne corks pop, the sun drops behind the horizon. |
