HISTORY:
Now a golf estate on a par with the best in the world, Fancourt's history is that of a family home that grew and grew ...

Henry Fancourt White built a country house in Blanco, at the foot of the Outeniqua Mountains, in the early days of South Africa's expansion, in the days of ox-wagons, pioneers and impassable mountain ranges.
The building of Blanco House, in the style of a Cotswold Mansion, proceeded slowly from 1859. Henry, a wealthy man at the time, suffered a major financial setback in 1860 and died soon after. Blanco House was put up for auction in 1857 "a thatched-roof double-storey building with ten airy rooms, kitchen, pantry, outbuildings and servants'rooms."
The property was subsequently owned by Henri de Maraliac, Robert Drummond and M J Adams, the latter re-naming it Homewood in 1879. At a public auction in 1903 Homewood was sold to Ernest Montagu White, who re-named the house Fancourt in memory of his father - Henry Fancourt White.
Ernest, or Montagu as he was known, spent the English winters at Fancourt. He made extensive improvements to the house, using indigenous timber from forests in the area. Always immaculately dressed - a Panama hat and a flower in his buttonhole being his trademark - Montagu supervised his estate from a white-canopied cart drawn by a red ox, he painted watercolours, knotted rugs and lived the life of a country gentleman.
Sadly, in 1916 Montagu, his sister and a friend succumbed to mushroom poisoning after enjoying a dinner of wild mushrooms picked by Montagu earlier in the day. The house stood empty for two years after the tragedy, although, it was said, the deceased Montagu and Elizabeth continued to visit the much-loved home!
Rumours of ghosts did not deter Rubin Greer from purchasing Fancourt in 1918. He and his family, which included four daughters, brought music and laughter back to Fancourt. Legend has it that performance of the band members at their dances depended on the liquid refreshment they consumed. Too little and they refused to play, too much and they were unable to play!
A number of owners followed, and a century after Henry Fancourt White built his home it was in disrepair due to neglect. Dr Krynauw bought Fancourt in 1960 and through his skill and excellent taste, the property became a symbol of high-class living once again.
In 1969 Fancourt was sold to a property developer, who went into liquidation soon after. Andre and Helene Pieterse became the new owners and in 1987 they decided to transform their country house into an hotel and golf estate and the Fancourt Hotel opened in grand style on 23 March 1989.
By July 1993, however, Fancourt was on the market once again and in 1994 a German couple, Hasso and Sabine Plattner, bought the estate out of liquidation. Expansion and development proceeded at a fast pace, and when the present becomes history it will be said that Fancourt never stopped growing.
The heart of Fancourt is now the modern clubhouse, but the old Manor House will always hold its soul. When you visit the estate spend time in the stillness of the reading room, walk along the quiet passages. Imagine life as it was then, with Panama hats and buttonholes, with grand pianos, campher-wood kists, old silver and wild mushroom dinners. Imagine you're not alone... |
THE CLUBHOUSE:
The Clubhouse with its wide, vaulted passageway and towering windows with stunning views of gardens and manicured fairways, is the hub of Fancourt activity.

GARDENS:
By Mike Viviers, Fancourt horticulturist.
Long ago I realised that one of the functions of plants was to make life more bearable. It was when a client said "Fancourt's gardens have turned it into a holiday place instead of a hotel" that I realised that the plants were fulfilling their function.
It started with a request by the owner, Sabine Plattner, to turn the then exceedingly formal Fancourt into "a garden with something wild to it". Millions have been spent on plants and a mature tree transplanting programme, excluding labour and other garden costs.

The existence of a nursery was cemented when the Plattners decided to build The Links, the fourth golf course at Fancourt, and to introduce a mature tree transplanting programme.
About 700 mature trees, obtained from as far afield as 300km from George, were transplanted onto the Montagu and Outeniqua championship golf courses.
At the same time, more than 160 000 grasses and plants were grown inhouse over a seven month period, thereby significantly reducing plant requirement costs for Fancourt.
Not only does the nursery provide plants, but it is also used to "chip and turn" all vegetable matter at Fancourt into compost.
Over time the gardens at Fancourt gained a momentum of their own, and we came to realise that we actually have an extensive collection of plants.
The next step was a logical one: to shift our focus to variety - to collect as many species of plants that would grow in the Garden Route area.
Today we have an extraordinary variety of species.
The Fancourt horticulture division embraces the following:
Providing plants for Fancourt;
Garden maintenance;
Tree care;
A nursery. |
SURROUNDING FANCOURT:
The Garden Route is renowned throughout the world for its immense natural beauty. Winding along the edge of the warm Indian Ocean, the Garden Route encompasses all of nature's wonders: from huge mountains ranges to small lakes and the country's largest remaining indigenous forest, the Tsitsikamma, which is home to a kaleidoscope of flora and fauna and a multitude of rare bird species. The Garden Route is a malaria-free area.

Trails:
The Fancourt Leisure Trail:

Consisting of a wide variety of contours, the trail provides both a challenge for the serious enthusiast or a more leisurely approach for the amateur. So whether running or walking you will have the opportunity to nourish body and soul while enjoying the Resort's scenic beauty.
For those with more energy, mountain bikes and backpacks are available for hire, and there is plenty of horse-riding in the region.
Equestrian:
The Riding Centre is based on the eastern side of the George Riding Club grounds. It offers outrides in the forests surrounding the beautiful Garden Route Dam. Flowers and birds are abundant and you may have the luck to see the occassional bushback or loerie.
The Riding Centre offers rides of different lengths and standards. Champagne breakfast rides are available and this could include non-riders or family members.
Bird Watching:
The Garden Route is famed for its accessible bird watching. The presence of varied and contrasting habitats in the area ensure over 200 different species of birds, the most well-known being the Knysna Loerie and the Nerina Trogon.
The ultimate golfing Experience:
Golf at Fancourt captures the natural beauty of the Garden Route; the mountains, the water, the wildlife, nature and birdlife. Fancourt's four courses offer the golfer a variety of experiences - the Montagu and Outeniqua parkland golf courses offer well maincured fairways and superb bent grass greens. The Links, home to the prestigious Presidents Cup 2003 golf tournament, is truly of championship standard. Bramble Hill is a public pay and play facility.
Courses:
Fancourt Hotel and Country Club Estate has four golf courses to offer the golfing visitor. All the courses are renowned for their amazing year round condition and the attention to detail that is shown.

The Montagu:
With two 18-hole parkland courses there is nothing to beat a Fancourt round. Since Golf at these two courses at Fancourt is limited to members, their guests and resort guests, you will have ample time and space to savour the Fancourt golfing experience.
"With golfing critics becoming more discerning and the increase in new modern courses, we believed it was time to rejuvenate the Montagu layout and improve the course immeasurably," says Resort General Manager, Ingrid Diesel. "The course which originally set the standards for golf course conditioning in South Africa was voted No 1 in 2000. We believe the new-look course has restored it to its former glory.
The Outeniqua:
With two 18-hole parkland courses The Outeniqua , that took shape under master golfer Gary Player, worldclass conditioning and a setting that takes in mountains, water and wildlife, there is nothing to beat a Fancourt round. Since Golf at these two courses at Fancourt is limited to members, their guests and resort guests, you will have ample time and space to savour the Fancourt golfing experience.
If you're feeling a little rusty or just want to ease into your game, our Warm-up Area is available to resort guests and members. Here you will be able to make use of a putting and chipping green, green-side and fairway bunkers as well as a full-length driving range.
The Links:
Unique to South Africa, The Links golf course was officially opened in November 2000, by owner Dr Hasso Plattner and course designer, Mr Gary Player.
Created from a previously flat piece of land, over 700 000 cubic metres of earth was moved in transforming it into a typical Links style. The course presents undulating windswept terrain, and dune-style landscape and is the only such course in South Africa.
Every hole has received detailed attention to ensure that the overall balance in terms of length, position of hazards and shot values are in harmony. As a result, The Links presents a stern test in all weather conditions.
"The Links has satisfied and far exceeded my design philosophy, which was to capture the essence of what makes great traditional links golf courses so special," Fancourt owner Hasso Plattner said. "I believe that The Links will provide golfers with the most natural golf experience, which to me, is what golf is all about."
Set to test the best golfer in every way, The Links has some extraordinary holes, like the par-3 second, with its bunker in the heart of the enormous green. Gary Player said, "We included the bunker to break it up, but the front left of the green is severely sloped, so the golfer can use the contours to get the ball near the flag. You will never be stymied by the trap" Player added.
Jacobs says, "This sort of thing is really only associated with links courses and will break the rules of design. We want to keep the element of quirkiness that is the characteristic of links golf."
Course superintendents Kosie Mentz and Greg Leckie, both widely experienced and respected in the field of golf course maintenence, have done an incredible job to present a course in pristine condition and are a fantastic asset to The Links.
In a first for South Africa, the tees and fairways are a mix of four cool season grasses: Kentucky Blue, Rye, Fescue and Bent, with the greens a dominant Bent. These grasses allow for the traditional Pitch and Run shot to be played and also for the ball to 'chase' along the fairways.
The clubhouse at The Links is located only metres from the 18th green, with terraced areas and picture windows, to take maximum advantage of course and mountain views. All in all there is a very special atmosphere.
Bramble Hill:
Bramble Hill is the fourth course on the estate and is a Parkland course with Links features and offers a nice mix of the estate's other three courses. The course is a public 'Pay for Play' facility and has been designed to offer golfers of every level a Fancourt experience. As the executive golf director at Fancourt, Mike Hargreaves is head of all golf operations. |

GARDEN ROUTE:
Scattered along the Garden Route, fashionable seaside resorts abound, attracting jet-setters from around the globe. Tiny coastal villages appeal especially to outdoor people who enjoy an unstructured holiday agenda. The coastal drive links a series of charming towns interspersed with natural beauty. Along the way, every kind of adventure activity is possible; scuba diving, abseiling, fishing and more.
Mountains crowd close to a shoreline dotted with beaches and bays, and vividly coloured wild flowers delight the eye. Between Heidelberg and Storms River, the Garden Route runs parallel to a coastline featuring lakes, mountains, tall indigenous forests, amber-coloured rivers and golden beaches. Meandering trails are followed by hikers, the forests invite long, leisurely drives, and the lakes and rivers lend themselves to swimming, boating and fishing. A wide range of leisure options, spectacular scenery and a mild climate guarantee an unforgettable holiday experience.
The Garden Route has a Mediterranean Maritime climate, with moderately hot summers, and mild to chilly winters. It is one of the richest rainfall areas, most of which occurs in the winter months, brought by the humid sea-winds from the Indian Ocean. Any time of the year is good for visiting the area, depending if you enjoy a peaceful retreat during the winter months or a bustling holiday destination during the summer.
The region provides a stirring study in contrasts:
Situated halfway between Cape Town and Port Elizabeth, beautiful Mossel Bay is a coastal village and harbour of the World Famous Garden Route. This popular holiday town is surrounded by a sunbathed peninsula and the refreshing waters of the Indian Ocean. It is a busy summer destination as well as an ideal winter retreat. It is blessed with a mild climate all-year round but its most important feature is its status as the historical capital of the Garden Route. Mossel Bay is sportsman's and waters sport enthusiast's paradise, it has a very wide variety of adventure sports facilities as well as sport of the conventional type, such as golf, squash, tennis, bungi and bridge diving, indoor heated pools, horse riding to name but a few. And if you're into water sports, there is some of the countries most adrenalin induced activities available - such as, shark cage diving, ship wreck diving, snorkeling, power boating and others.
The delightful town of George, known as "The Gateway to the Garden Route", graces a coastal plateau in a fertile area of lush greenery at the foot of the Outeniqua Mountains. George has many historical landmarks to be visited. Like The Slave Tree, an ancient English Oak planted by Landdrost van Kervel. Known as the Slave Tree because of the very large chain and lock embedded in the trunk, it has been declared a national monument. And the King Edward VII Library building is said to be the best example of Edwardian architecture in George.
15 km West of George, nestled in a magnificent and sheltered rocky cove where the golden beach sands meet the frothy, turquoise waters of the ocean, Herold's Bay has coastal walks and trails ideal for spotting dolphins and whales. The unspoilt coastal fynbos makes it a popular spot for birders and nature-lovers.
Oudtshoorn, "Capital of the Klein Karoo", is set in a semi-arid valley, providing the ideal habitat for ostriches which are farmed here on a grand scale. Amidst the 400 ostrich farms surrounding the town, 3 have distinguished themselves worthy to be named " show farms". Become exposed to this exotic bird species, the largest in the world.
Also situated close to the Klein Karoo Town of Oudtshoorn is the Cango Caves - one of the worlds great natural wonders, sculptured by nature through the ages. Mysterious and breathtaking limestone formations in a wide variety of natural colours, a subterranean wonderland. The Cango Caves are among the top ten most visited South African attractions.
Wilderness is set between the Kaaimans River and the Goukama Nature Reserve, whilst being bordered by the Outeniqua Mountains. Renowned for it tranquil sea and beaches which stretch on forever, Wilderness has become a Internationally sought after holiday resort. Wilderness is also surrounded by many rivers and natural lakes and lagoons. This makes it a great spot for water sport enthusiasts, who flock there regularly. There is 2500 ha National Park with five rivers, five lakes, two estuaries and 18km of coastline. Wilderness sports many types of wildlife, in particular birds. Many types of water birds breed here and this makes it ideal for bird-watchers. The many other types of recreation include hiking, dolphin and whale-watching, hang-gliding, paragliding, horse riding, mountain-biking, scenic drives, Wilderness Lakes Art Route, day tours, ferry cruises, angling, boating and other water sports. Wilderness also has a great number of craftsmen and women in the area. There work is often for sale and the tourist can pick up many bargains at the monthly craft markets, held in the middle and end of the month. This and many other interesting aspects of the town add to it's rustic charm. A place that must be visited by any tourist in the Garden Route, it truly is a place of timeless beauty.
Knysna is one of the Southern Cape coast's best known holiday destinations, situated between lush forests and the shores of the peaceful lagoon - it offers many activities and attractions of a wide variety. The most well known attraction being the heads - two great sandstone cliffs guarding the mouth of the lagoon which connects the estuary with the sea. A lookout has been erected on the Eastern Head, commanding spectacular views of the lagoon, Leisure Isle and Knysna. The Western Head is a privately owned nature Reserve - Featherbed Bay. The Knysna Lagoon is one of the few places along the coast and in the world that supports a oyster hatchery.
Tsitsikamma is the Khoi-San word for a place of many waters. It is the perfect description of this exquisite area but does not do justice to the overwhelming experience the Tsitsikamma provides for those fortunate enough to visit it and to indulge in its unique pleasures.
The Tsitsikamma National Park is internationally recognized for its forests which harbour and conserve the giant Outeniqua yellowwood - one of the few true monarchs of the world's forests. This enormous tree is one of the most successful species in existence, having survived unchanged for millions of years. Tsitsikamma National Park is also Africa's oldest and largest marine reserve, playing a vital role in the preservation and conservation of marine fauna and flora. Tourists, and particularly hikers from all over the world, visit the area which is known for its rugged, unspoiled coastline - a photographer's dream.
The region has many wonderfully scenic hiking trails of which it is justifiably proud, though its greatest asset remains the world-renowned Otter Trail. This is a once-in-a-lifetime experience that remains indelibly imprinted on the mind.
Addo Elephant Park is located in the Garden Route - a delightful reserve near Port Elizabeth. Its biggest attractions are its big 330 Elephants and many Antelope like Eland, Bontebokke etc. The Elephants used to be tightly packed in this park but it has recently been expanded so that these large but quietly trodden pachyderms have a wider area in which to roam. Another animal that lives here is the flightless dung Beetle; it has survived in South Africa only in this area.
The rocky heights of Mountain Zebra National Park's Bankberg embrace rolling plains and deep valleys becoming an entrancing preserve for the Cape mountain Zebra. Currently the population of Zebra here stands at 350. Other mammals found here include Eland, black Wildebeest, red Hartebeest and Gemsbok. Mountain Reedbuck and grey Rhebok frequent the higher areas, whilst Caracal occupies the niche of primary predator. |
